Kod Kancelira
About This Spot
Stepping into Kod Kancelira feels like slipping into a cherished corner of Istria’s past, where time moves gently and stories unfold slowly beside hearty, familiar food. Nestled along a quiet street in Bale, this restaurant welcomes diners with the warmth of an old trattoria — its rustic walls and sunlit terrace framing views of the town’s historic heart. The mood here invites relaxed conversation and savoring each moment without rush.
At Kod Kancelira, the rhythm of the meal is shaped by tradition and care, matching the slow Istrian pace. The air carries subtle hints of the grill and fresh seafood, drawing you toward plates that tell a tale of the region’s coastal and inland treasures. Whether sharing a platter of freshly caught fish or wrapping delicate fuži pasta around rich, local sauces, each bite feels like part of a larger story — one of place, family, and enduring recipes.
The setting reflects this ease, with a genuine attentiveness that isn’t intrusive but simply thoughtful. Familiar faces move calmly between tables, bridging the gap between kitchen and guest with a kindness that encourages lingering over wine or the sweet finish of palačinke. On summer evenings, the terrace becomes a quiet stage where the gentle breeze complements the unfolding flavors and the soft murmur of nearby conversations.
Visitors returning here often become part of that shared experience — drawn not only by the food but by the overall feeling of being at home in a place that honors local culture and ingredients. Kod Kancelira offers a chance to savor Istria’s culinary heritage in a space where the atmosphere still speaks of generations, and each meal is a welcome pause in the day’s journey.

Great and fresh sea food. One of the best fish plates I ever had! The service was very friendly and fast. Thanks for the hospitality.

We went there three nights in a row. Partially because they are very good, partly because everything else was closed. But I think the selection and prices are very similar to other local places. I struggled a bit with scampi- shells were super hard and there were no tools. But maybe it is just me. Cold meat and cheese platter was fabulous!

We love tradition, we love autochthony, that's why we chose Bale/Valle and lunch at the beautiful Tavern " Kod Kancelira ". We often enjoy excellent meals here. The venue looks exactly as a typical Istrian tavern should look like that is, trattoria from ancient times in the characteristic Istrian climate. From the terrace and windows of the tavern there is a beautiful view of the historic center of Bale/Valle. The architecturally harmonious town, restored, with medieval towers acted as a film backdrop from some surrealist Fellini film. The tavern feels a real home atmosphere, with a fireplace and a harmoniously decorated ambience, there is also the exceptional kindness of the owner and staff. All lovers that those looking for Istrian cuisine, old dishes from the fireplace and dishes from flowing (pinjate) can find everything here in the tavern "Kod Kancelira". The tavern offer a wide selection of cold appetizers, traditional Istrian cold cuts, sheep cheese, sausages and of course Istrian prosciutto, all products from local producers. The food is adapted to the seasons, for the reason that everything is fresh. In winter, home-made sausages and ombolo are served on the fireplace, so home-made cabbage, fiorentina and steaks are grilled. They also cook excellent chicken žgvacet (chicken goulash). Also offer all kinds of fish that are now caught in the winter, so guests love baraj (friar), sea bass and sea bream, which are always fresh. Cuttlefish on black ink with polenta is extremely tasty. This time we enjoyed homemade gnocchi with venison and homemade fuži with veal sauce and white gnocchi with truffles, for an appetizer. Fantastically. For the main course, we enjoyed excellent grilled mixed meat, homemade Istrian sausages and ombolo with sauerkraut, and pork medallions with ham and mushroom sauce. Dessert is great with pancakes and cheescake. All price to the chef. The service is friendly and professional, the prices are reasonable.

Food is always delicious with great service. White wine Malvazija is highly recommended. We always come back and love the place.

Excellent service and excellent food. The cuttlefish goulash with polenta is truly something worth trying. I was impressed! Definitely a recommendation for traditional local cuisine!
